The Vascular Plant Atlas of Georgia is an on-line update of Jones and Coile (1988) and provides a source of vouchered information for the distribution of plants within the state. Records are based on the collections of the University of Georgia Herbarium [GA], which has by far the largest holdings of Georgia plants. The documented occurrence of a species in a county is indicated by a dot in that county on the map. This Web version of the atlas, including the ferns through the monocots, was completed in mid-2000 with support from Dr. S. E. Younts, Emeritus Professor and former Vice President, the University of Georgia Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach (1997-1999) and Dr. John Ambrose, former Director, Natural Heritage Program, the Georgia State Department of Natural Resources (1999-2000; Contract 1031RE167336). The taxonomy used for the ferns and gymnosperm taxa follows the Flora of North America (FNA 1993). Monocot species names follow the PLANTS Database (USDA 1999), and the family delimitations more or less follow Dahlgren et al. (1985). Currently the faculty and staff of the University of Georgia Herbarium are updating and completing The Vascular Plant Atlas of Georgia with funding from the National Science Foundation (DBI-0345226 and DBI-0450818; Wendy B. Zomlefer, PI; David E. Giannasi, coPI), and we anticipate a comprehensive posting in the near future. The present project participants are making these data available in the interim while acknowledging that many strides have been made in the systematics of these taxa since this project was initiated in 1997. The distributions are dynamic and may change as new specimens are collected within the state. Many counties are relatively under-collected and exploring these areas will undoubtedly lead to new county records. The Atlas is a specimen-derived database, and new county records must be supported by a voucher specimen deposited in GA Herbarium. We encourage donation of specimens. Individuals not familiar with making a proper specimen and label data should contact GA staff for instructions. Endangered or threatened plant species should never be collected. Contact the GA Herbarium or the Georgia Department of Natural Resources with questions about the status of a plant. |
