The Vascular Plant Distribution Atlas of Georgia
The Vascular Plant Distribution Atlas of Georgia (in
preparation) will be a publication that will show the county
distribution of vascular plant species occurring within the state.
An example of a map that will be included in the atlas is shown
on the left. This map indicates all counties in which Trillium
catesbaei has been found growing and is based strictly on
holdings in the University of Georgia Herbarium. For purposes of
producing the atlas, county distribution information for all
plants housed in the UGA Herbarium is being entered into a
computer database. As new inventories are completed and new
locations for species are found, the database will be updated to
provide the most recent and accurate distribution information for
plant species occurring within the state. The atlas initially
will be available in hardcopy format and later will be available
on the internet. This information will ultimately be used by the
UGA Herbarium in the production of an illustrated Flora of
Georgia. At this time, Georgia is the only southern state that
has made no attempt to produce such a flora.
