Two different stages in the sexual reproduction of Monoblepharis.
The left photo shows a young
oogonium (cell with rich cytoplasmic contents) with an attached
antheridium from which all the sperm have been released. A sperm
cell may be out of focus and at the tip of the oogonium. The
oogonium will have a single egg.
The right photo shows mature
oospores that pop out of the oogonia following fertilization of
the eggs. Several empty oogonia with the empty, attached
antheridia may be seen. Some of the hyphae illustrate the foamy
characteristic of hyphae in the Monoblepharidales.
Both photos courtesy of Marilyn
Mollicone, Dept. of Plant Biology, University of Maine.
