There are a number of lakes within a short drive from Athens, of which two
are reasonable for windsurfing. One of these is
Lake Hartwell (Corps of
Engineers Project), where I usually go. The other is Lake Lanier, closer
to Atlanta, and favored by the
Atlanta Boardsailing Club, a nice group of people with whom I would spend
more time if I lived closer. The town
of Hartwell, GA is at the base of the lake.

This is a link to a map of North East Georgia (330 kb), showing both Athens
and Lake Hartwell. Lake Hartwell is on the Georgia / South Carolina Border, with
the bulk of the lake a bit southeast of Interstate 85. It is about a 1 hour drive
from Athens to Long Point Park on Lake Hartwell. |

This is a link to a map of lower Lake Hartwell (340 kb). The lake was formed by
a dam on the Savannah River; at places it is 160 feet deep over the old river bed.
From Long Point Park there are 1 to 3 miles of clear sailing for almost all wind
directions. Singing Pines, in South Carolina, has also been reported to have
good windsurfing. |
