Alexander Bucksch, Associate Professor in Plant Biology, was featured in a UGA Research news article about his DIRT/3D (Digital Imaging of Root Traits) imaging system that is designed to measure 18 different root traits from mature maize plants. With this new technology researchers and plant breeders can compare the root systems of different plants and cultivate those plants with root traits that allow them to resist drought and other impacts of climate change. Alex’s team introduced the capabilities of DIRT/3D in a recently published article in Plant Physiology.

This research was supported by the ROOTS program of the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA-E) and a CAREER award from National Science Foundation (NSF).
