Dr. Thomas Wyatt Turner was the first African American to receive a PhD in Botany and was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). 

George Washington Carver is one of the most well-known and most celebrated Black scientists of the 20th century.

Congratulations to Derek Denney, a PhD candidate in the Anderson Lab on receiving the department’s 2022 Wilbur Duncan Award!  The award recognizes an outstanding graduate student who excels in at least 2 of the 3 categories of research, teaching, and service.
