Climate Disruption of Plant-Microbe Interactions

Plant Biology's Anny Chung and co-authors take stock on how climate change may disrupt essential plant microbe interactions.

Interactions between plants and microbes have important consequences for healthy ecosystems. This paper reviews how climate change may disrupt these interactions and the consequences. The authors developed a conceptual framework to integrate the responses of plant-microbe interactions to climate over different scales in space and time. Finally, they combined a new graphical model of how plant-microbe interactions influence resistance to climate change with a statistical approach to predict the consequences of increasing variability in climate. As a result, they suggest pathways through which plant-microbe interactions can affect resilience during recovery from climate disruption, and highlight opportunities for future research.
